Trewhella Returns in Style as the Finches Welcome a Special Guest!

It was another enjoyable evening of competitive Subbuteo at Loddon Hall, Twyford, on Monday 12th October, with Finchampstead Subbuteo Club welcoming back a familiar face and entertaining a special visitor from the world of sports journalism.

MARTIN'S BACK – AND BACK TO WINNING WAYS!

The evening's competition featured a four-round Swiss-style tournament, with players battling for points and positions across four rounds of matches.

However, the night belonged to Martin Trewhella, who made a triumphant return to the tables following a lengthy absence through injury.

It was fantastic to see Martin back among his fellow Finches, enjoying his Subbuteo once again and proving that his competitive instincts hadn't deserted him during his time away.

What better way to celebrate a comeback than by finishing the evening as tournament winner!

Away from the action on the tables, the club was delighted to welcome Emily Legg, a London-based sports journalist and multimedia content producer who writes for The South West Londoner

Emily joined us to research an upcoming article, taking the opportunity to discover more about Finchampstead Subbuteo Club,  its members and the growing appeal of tabletop football.

Throughout the evening, players were only too happy to spend time chatting with Emily, sharing their personal experiences of Subbuteo, what attracted them to the hobby and what being part of the club means to them.

The conversations also explored the social benefits of Subbuteo, the friendships formed around the tables and the welcoming environment that the club continues to develop.

And, of course, among those sharing their experiences was Emily's dad, David Legg, one of the original 'Finch Five' founding members who helped establish Finchampstead Subbuteo Club.

hospital radio reading trophy

The Hospital Radio Reading Trophy provided a memorable evening at Finchampstead Subbuteo Club, as we welcomed the sports team from Hospital Radio Reading (HRR) to record a special outside-broadcast feature showcasing the club, its players and the enjoyment of Subbuteo.

On the tables, players competed in a four-round Swiss-style Club WASPA tournament, with each match lasting 24 minutes, comprising two 12-minute halves.

The evening produced plenty of competitive action, closely contested encounters and some excellent Subbuteo.

Between rounds, HRR's sports team — Maurice Moore, Richard Mark and Nuri Khan — chatted with players about their experiences of playing at Finchampstead, what being part of the club means to them, and the wider social and mental health benefits that Subbuteo can offer.

The interviews highlighted the friendship, camaraderie and sense of belonging that make the club about much more than simply winning matches.

The evening belonged to Simon Hawley, who produced a great performance to claim the inaugural Hospital Radio Reading Trophy. Simon completed the tournament unbeaten, winning all four matches to secure the maximum 12 points, finishing an impressive five points clear of his nearest challengers.

A fitting champion for a special occasion and another memorable chapter in the growing story of Finchampstead Subbuteo Club.
