FINCHAMPSTEAD SUBBUTEO CLUB TOURNAMENT WINNERS  WALL

2026 - 2027

Our Winners Wall celebrates club members who have made their mark at Finchampstead Subbuteo Club.

Solent Subbuteo Club claimed victory in our round robin interclub challenge on 4 July 2026.

Simon Hawley then lifted the Hospital Radio Reading Trophy on 28 September 2026, following an evening of Swiss competition.

Triumphant return to the tables after an njury layoff for Martin Trewhella, winner of the October WASPA tournament on 12 October 2026, also played using the Swiss format.

Congratulations to all our winners, and thanks to everyone who took part.

We’ll continue adding future champions, photographs and tournament details as our club’s story of tabletop football unfolds.

Finchampstead subbuteo club takes to the airwaves with Hopital Radio Reading!

A Special Night of Subbuteo, Competition and Broadcasting!

The Hospital Radio Reading Trophy provided a memorable evening at Finchampstead Subbuteo Club, as we welcomed the sports team from Hospital Radio Reading (HRR) to record a special outside-broadcast feature showcasing the club, its players and the enjoyment of Subbuteo.

On the tables, players competed in a four-round Swiss-style Club WASPA tournament, with each match lasting 24 minutes, comprising two 12-minute halves.

The evening produced plenty of competitive action, closely contested encounters and some excellent Subbuteo.

Between rounds, HRR's sports team — Maurice Moore, Richard Mark and Nuri Khan — chatted with players about their experiences of playing at Finchampstead, what being part of the club means to them, and the wider social and mental health benefits that Subbuteo can offer.

The interviews highlighted the friendship, camaraderie and sense of belonging that make the club about much more than simply winning matches.

The evening belonged to Simon Hawley, who produced a great performance to claim the inaugural Hospital Radio Reading Trophy. Simon completed the tournament unbeaten, winning all four matches to secure the maximum 12 points, finishing an impressive five points clear of his nearest challengers.

A fitting champion for a special occasion and another memorable chapter in the growing story of Finchampstead Subbuteo Club.

Trewhella Returns in Style as the Finches Welcome a Special Guest!

It was another enjoyable evening of competitive Subbuteo at Loddon Hall, Twyford, on Monday 12th October, with Finchampstead Subbuteo Club welcoming back a familiar face and entertaining a special visitor from the world of sports journalism.

MARTIN'S BACK – AND BACK TO WINNING WAYS!

The evening's competition featured a four-round Swiss-style tournament, with players battling for points and positions across four rounds of matches.

However, the night belonged to Martin Trewhella, who made a triumphant return to the tables following a lengthy absence through injury.

It was fantastic to see Martin back among his fellow Finches, enjoying his Subbuteo once again and proving that his competitive instincts hadn't deserted him during his time away.

What better way to celebrate a comeback than by finishing the evening as tournament winner!

Congratulations, Martin! It's great to have you back, and even better to see you returning to winning ways.

Away from the action on the tables, the club was delighted to welcome Emily Legg, a London-based sports journalist and multimedia content producer who writes for The South West Londoner

Emily joined us to research an upcoming article, taking the opportunity to discover more about Finchampstead Subbuteo Club,  its members and the growing appeal of tabletop football.

Throughout the evening, players were only too happy to spend time chatting with Emily, sharing their personal experiences of Subbuteo, what attracted them to the hobby and what being part of the club means to them.

The conversations also explored the social benefits of Subbuteo, the friendships formed around the tables and the welcoming environment that the club continues to develop.

And, of course, among those sharing their experiences was Emily's dad, David Legg, one of the original 'Finch Five' founding members who helped establish Finchampstead Subbuteo CluB.

finch v solent 2026

WASPA test match series bring players from different clubs, regions and countries together for friendly competition. They offer a chance to share a love of Subbuteo, experience different standards of play and build friendships, even when attending a tournament isn’t possible.

Our Finchampstead v Solent encounter captured that spirit, with six players from each club meeting at Loddon Hall in Twyford for a day of tabletop football.

Solent took the overall honours, with both clubs enjoying the competition and camaraderie.

MEET THE FINCHES! ⚽🟣

Get to know the six dedicated committee members who keep Finchampstead Subbuteo Club running! From organising club nights and competitions to managing finances, welcoming newcomers and promoting our club, these are the people working behind the scenes to make everything happen.

Six people, one club, and a shared passion for Subbuteo!

 Dave Simmill - Chairman

[AKA Subbuteo Dave]

Dave’s love affair with Subbuteo began in the 1970s, playing endless leagues and cup competitions on the living room floor with friends.

His first set, the iconic Munich 1974 edition, sparked a lifelong passion for tabletop football.

A devoted Liverpool supporter and is torn on the question of favourite Liverpool player, although when pushed it is Kenny Dalglish,

His proudest and most satisfying Subbuteo achievement is establishing Finchampstead Subbuteo Club, bringing together players who share his enthusiasm for the game.

As Club Founder and Chairman, Dave is passionate about creating a welcoming environment where players of all abilities can enjoy Subbuteo, make friendships and rediscover the magic of the game.

Away from the tables, Dave favourite holiday destination is the Greek Islands and three dinner guests would be Jürgen Klopp,  Professor Brian Cox and Lee Mack!

For Dave, Subbuteo is more than a game – it's about friendship, community and keeping the flicking spirit alive!

alan cutler - vice chairman

[AKA Snapshot]

Alan's Subbuteo journey began in the early 1970s, when a visit to his cousin's house introduced him to the magic of tabletop football.

His first set, a 1973/74 Club Edition, remains proudly in his collection today!

After nearly 40 years away, Alan rediscovered Subbuteo in 2014 before enjoying another return with Finchampstead Subbuteo Club, where he became one of the original founding five.

A passionate Leeds United supporter and admirer of Allan Clarke, Alan favours a traditional 3-5-2 formation, heavyweight figures and the delicate art of chip shooting.

For Alan, club nights offer more than competitive football. They're an opportunity to escape everyday pressures, immerse himself in the game and enjoy the company of like-minded enthusiasts.

Away from the tables, Alan appreciates the footballing philosophy of Marcelo Bielsa, enjoys the Caribbean sunshine in St Lucia!

WASPA: Philosophy and Tournaments

WASPA brings amateur Subbuteo players together through friendly competition at regional, national and international level. Its philosophy is simple: every player and every country deserves equal recognition, with opportunities to meet, compete and enjoy the game.

WASPA offers several tournament formats, including Regional tournaments, Promotional events and the National Cup Challenge. World rankings provide an added competitive element, while events with as few as three players allow smaller clubs to take part.

Most tournaments follow FISTF playing rules, although alternative rules and events restricted to Subbuteo equipment are also supported. Promotional tournaments have ranking restrictions to give developing players more opportunities.

Clubs can organise up to two WASPA tournaments each month: one Regional tournament and one additional event. Full regulations and eligibility requirements are set out in the WASPA Handbook.

At Finchampstead Subbuteo Club, we share this spirit of inclusion, sportsmanship and community—bringing players together for friendly, enjoyable competition.

Simon Hawley receives the inaugural Hospital Radio Reading Trophy from HRR’s Nuri Khan after winning Finchampstead’s first Club WASPA tournament of the new 2026–27 season. The event marked Hospital Radio Reading’s visit to Loddon Hall, where their team recorded interviews and captured the action for a forthcoming sports programme feature.

Finchampstead on the Global Stage for WASPA 2026–2027

Finchampstead Subbuteo Club is listed in the WASPA Conference League for the 2026–2027 season, joining a worldwide community united by a passion for table football.

The new season’s line-up features 78 clubs across 17 nations, organised into three divisions: Top Clubs, Development League and Conference League. Finchampstead is among the 50 clubs in the Conference League, where the emphasis is on development, growth and global community.

For our growing Berkshire club, inclusion is another encouraging milestone in a journey that began with games in members’ homes and has developed into regular club nights at Loddon Hall in Twyford. It places the Finchampstead name alongside clubs from across the UK and around the world.

Our focus remains on welcoming players of all abilities, enjoying friendly competition and helping members develop their game. Club WASPA events give us an opportunity to support those aims while contributing to the wider amateur Subbuteo community.

From local flicks to international recognition, we’re proud to be part of the WASPA family.
